In the centre of Amsterdam a cone of chips is part of a day out, just like a boat trip along the canals. Chip shops line the old streets one after another, and the queues are full of visitors from all over the world. For owners who want to stand out, Friet van Beus supplies fresh chips in Amsterdam: cut from Agria and Frieslander potatoes we grow ourselves, with no additives and never pre-fried.
For many tourists a bag of chips with mayonnaise is one of the first things they taste in Amsterdam. The chip shops in the centre know it, and competition is fierce. On a busy street you are judged on a single bite: is the chip crisp outside and soft inside, and does it actually taste of potato?
Beyond the tourist core the city looks different again. In the residential areas snack bars have their regulars, restaurants serve chips next to a steak or a pot of mussels, and food trucks turn up at markets, festivals and in the parks. For all of them, guests increasingly ask where their food comes from.
Kitchens in old Amsterdam buildings are often small and the storage is smaller still. Our chips arrive vacuum packed, so they fit neatly in the fridge and you do not have to stack sacks of potatoes in a cellar. The peeling and cutting has already been done, which saves a lot of time and mess in a cramped kitchen. There is more about that packaging under vacuum packed chips.
If you do have the space and like to cut your own, chipping potatoes in Amsterdam are also available whole: washed or scraped. Cutting yourself saves money and lets you decide the thickness of the cut. Which option works best depends on your kitchen and your numbers, and we are glad to help you think it through.
Look for a chip wholesaler in Amsterdam and you will mostly find frozen fries from large factories. We work differently. Since 1994 the potatoes have grown on our own land in Zeewolde, and since 2016 we have cut chips from them ourselves. It started when a cafetaria near us was tired of peeling and cutting and asked whether we could take it over.
As a chip supplier in Amsterdam we deliver ourselves, with regular drivers. Cutting happens on Tuesday and Friday mornings, after which we set off. If you have a question about frying or want to change something, you speak to the family that also grows the potato. For restaurants that care about provenance, that is a story worth putting on the menu. Read also what is involved in switching to fresh chips.
The Amsterdam region is part of our regular delivery area, and that means more than the city alone. To the south we supply fresh chips in Amstelveen, where business dining and plenty of greenery sit side by side. To the north, on the river Zaan, we deliver fresh chips in Zaandam for a public with many tourists. On the eastern side there is fresh chips in Diemen, right up against the city. On the Flevoland side of our round lies Almere as well.
Fresh chips in Amsterdam for a permanent shop, a restaurant or a food truck at a festival: tell us what you need. Joost can be reached on 06 23055742 and Thijs on 06 23972300, both on WhatsApp as well.
The city centre often has rules for deliveries. Send us your address and the times that apply in your street, and we will look together at whether and how that fits into our round.
Yes, if you work ahead. Many shops blanch a batch at a quiet moment and only give the chips a short final fry when it gets busy. That way a portion is ready quickly without any loss of quality.
No. Friet van Beus supplies businesses only: chip shops, snack bars, restaurants, food trucks, events and wholesalers who sell on. Collection by appointment is possible if needed.
For a few weeks in August we cut from Frieslander, also grown by us. From September we return to the new Agria. Because everything comes from our own fields, the difference stays small.
