Potatoes and chips straight from the farm

The Friet van Beus farm in Zeewolde from the air

Potatoes straight from the farm: it sounds simple, but in catering it is the exception rather than the rule. Most chips pass through processors, traders and wholesalers before they end up in a fryer. At Friet van Beus that chain is as short as it can be. The potatoes grow on our land in Zeewolde, we cut them into fresh chips on the same farm and we bring them to your business ourselves. Here is what that means for you.

1. What straight from the farm really means

Straight from the farm means you buy from the person who grew the potato. Not from a middleman who buys up batches, but from the people who know which field it grew in, which variety it is and how it was stored after harvest. With us, there is not a single link between the field and your kitchen that we do not handle ourselves: growing, lifting, storing, washing, scraping, cutting, packing and delivering.

Note that chips straight from the farm are not the same as farmhouse chips. Farmhouse chips are a cut, usually with the skin left on. Chips from the farm are about origin: where the potato comes from and who grew it. The two can go together perfectly well, but they are different things.

2. Control over the crop

On our farm we have grown sugar beet, onions, winter wheat and above all potatoes since 1994. Joost is responsible for growing and crop protection. He decides what happens in the fields and keeps an eye on the crop all season. Leo, our father, combines growing with chip processing. That way, knowledge of the land and knowledge of the product sit with the same family.

For you that has a very practical consequence. Because we only use our own potatoes, there is hardly any difference in quality through the year. You never get a batch from an unknown source just because it happened to be cheap. How the year runs on the farm, from planting to storage, is described in our piece on the potato season.

3. Short lines to the family

A short chain also means short lines of contact. If you have a question about the chips, you call or message Thijs, who handles communication about the chips, or Joost if it is about the growing. You do not have to go through a customer service desk or a sales rep. If the chips ever turn out differently from what you are used to, the grower hears about it directly and can act on it.

If you want to see where your chips come from, you are welcome to visit the farm. More about the family behind the business is on about us. And if you want to know how freshly cut chips compare with the factory product from the freezer, the trade-offs are set out in fresh or frozen chips.

4. Farm chips on your menu

Guests increasingly care where their food comes from. Chips with a recognisable origin give you as a business owner a story that holds up: potatoes from a family farm in Flevoland, with no additives, freshly cut and not pre-fried. You can simply tell that story, on the menu, at the counter or on your social media.

We mainly supply cafeterias, chip shops and snack bars that fry a lot of chips, as well as wholesalers and food trucks. Fresh chips are delivered across the whole of the central Netherlands, and whole potatoes can be supplied nationwide. See the options for your type of business under fresh chips for chip shops, or call or message Thijs on 06 23972300 if you would like to try potatoes or chips straight from the farm.
